Orff-Schulwerk is a process to teach and learn music, based on
children’s natural ways of learning through singing, chanting,
rhyming, clapping, dancing and keeping a beat on anything that
is near. Through their natural instincts, children are
directed into learning music by hearing and making music first
and then reading and writing it later. We learn language the
same way. All children can learn through the Orff-Schulwerk,
not just the privileged, talented or chosen few. There is
opportunity for every child and each can contribute according
to ability.
The courses are taught in a non-competitive atmosphere where one of the rewards is the pleasure of making good music with others. In group work, we learn how to release our own innate creativity. A spirit of cooperation enables us to foster the same spirit in our children in the classroom. The use of poetry, rhymes, games, songs and dances are examples of basic materials. Spoken or sung, accompaniments are formed with extensions of clapping, stamping, drumming, and playing melody instruments. The Orff melody instruments include wooden xylophones and metal glockenspiels that offer quality sound immediately. As we explore and create our own ideas, we develop our skills as teachers while forming a sense of community by inventing and improvising together as in small ensembles, thus developing into sensitive listeners and considerate learners.
Research supports the need for a balance between emotional and
intellectual stimulation for healthy human development. This
balance is provided through the total, active involvement of
making music. An approach, not a method, the Orff-Schulwerk’s
unique quality lies in the elemental process for incorporating
speech with singing, movement and instruments playing as
learning tools.
